FAQ:

What is the point of Guerrilla Go Go (GGG)?

GGG performs in order to grab people’s attention and direct it where it is needed. The founders of GGG believe that our community members are by and large goodhearted and willing to contribute to positive change, but have been made weary by constant exposure to corruption, bad news, and cynicism. GGG connects regular citizens with “starting points” for awareness and action about a variety of issues. Our motto is: you don’t have to save the whole world to make a difference. Your attitude, your choices, your lifestyle — they do matter in the big picture. Pick one thing you care about and do something in that area. It really adds up!

Why the name?

While we do participate in some advertised events, the spirit of GGG is one of self-startup and spontaneity, which is why we prefer to “crash” crowds at bars, dance clubs, and other places that attract the masses. GGG doesn’t wait for an invitation, and in doing so we remind others to get up and get moving — with or without official permission. We label this movement movement “guerrilla” because it is loosely organized, nontraditional, and grassroots — it is truly people coming together to fight for the world they want.

How did it start?

In 2006, one of the founding GGG members had idea for an “uninvited dance troupe” while scribbling story ideas with her writing partner. A lifelong dance enthusiast with no formal training, she figured starting her own group was the best way to be in one. Making it cause-based was the next logical development, and so the concept was born. A few months later, she met three other women who were willing to make it a reality. GGG got off the ground in summer of 2007 and continues to grow.

How does GGG sustain itself?

At present, GGG members absorb their own costs of participation. We are also very fortunate to have gifted volunteers contributing web management, graphic design, promo materials, photography, and styling. GGG is also grateful to the local artists and entrepreneurs who have made special considerations for our business.

When the time is right, we may incorporate sponsorship and merchandise sales to cover the costs of our rapid growth. Please continue reading for more details.

Can I dance/help/donate?

Those interested in joining our team in any capacity should check out the Participate page.

GGG does not currently accept cash donations but would be very happy to collaborate with supporters in meeting specific financial needs. Such an arrangement could constitute Sponsorship status and would create a mutually beneficial partnership. Please contact us for more details.

Aren’t you exploiting your sexuality?

That’s our last intent. GGG does not believe in exploiting or repressing our sexual identities, even for a worthy cause. We dance because we love to dance, and we do so as healthy, whole, consenting adults. GGG takes the go go girl image off of its little box and gives it a voice, an opinion, and free range to take up space and make an impact. We do not strip, accept tips, or give personal attention to members of the audience. We do not choose our dancers based on gender, sexual preference, or body type. Our message is freedom and our medium is movement — it doesn’t get more feminist than that!

Where do you get your facts?

When one member submits a topic, she becomes the primary researcher and fact-checker using a range of reliable, nonpartisan resources. Every flyer we distribute will be published in the Archive page (coming soon) along with its sources cited.

How do you choose your issues?

Our featured issue changes on a monthly basis and is agreed upon by the dancers. We enthusiastically accept suggestions from our supporters and anyone who takes the time to drop us a line. That said, we are a progressive organization that prioritizes matters which affect us all: human rights, the environment, and quality of life.

Where can I see you perform?

GGG makes spontaneous appearances at venues in the San Diego area. To get the extra inside scoop, friend us on Myspace and follow us on Twitter for last-minute announcements about our whereabouts. Our advertised appearances will be publicized more broadly.
